Once a storm is less than 4 days away and your area is in the cone of uncertainty it is time to start freezing!
First, clean out your freezer. Throw away anything you can do without. Place all meat on the very bottom of your freezer. Stack gallon jugs of water on top of the meat. Place as many bottles of water as you can fit in the shelves of your freezer and close the door. Instruct family not to open the freezer unless absolutely necessary.
Start bagging ice in freezer Ziploc bags as well.
Remember heat rises, by placing meat on the bottom it will stay frozen and fresh for several days.
You will be starting to thaw just about the time ice becomes available in you area.

Lights and power
A flashlight for each person is nice to have. Even better are battery operated lanterns.
C and D batteries will be hard to find after a storm hits. So stock up in the months before hurricane season. Again, find them on sale and use coupons.
Generators.... you do not need a huge one. We have a 1850 watt, which allowed us to watch a movie every night, run the microwave, fans when it was hot, and we even washed a load of clothes which we hung out to dry. We filled two 5 gallon gas containers before the storm hit which lasted us for 5 days. We were conservative with usage however, only running the generator approx 4 to 6 hours a day.

Preparing months ahead.
Hurricane season ends November 30th. From December to June when grocery shopping buy an extra can of canned meat (chicken breast, tune, chicken spread, etc..). Clear a spot in the top of a spare closet or your own and start stock piling. Add an extra box of noodles or Velveeta shells and cheese to your stock pile. Spaghetti sauce, canned tomatoes and jars of alfredo sauce are necessities to your stock pile as well. Canned fruit and pudding are great treats to stock up.

It is day 6 since Hurricane Ike struck the gulf coast
We still have no electricity.
However, our family has ate well, kept medications cold, watched a movie everynight and basically been quite content.
How you ask?
Well that is what I am about to tell you!
